In a January 14 news article, WKBT News Channel 8 falsely reported.
"State law allows the county to enact a Premier Resort Area tax to help cover the county's nearly 90 million dollars of incomplete repairs to its transportation infrastructure." The image below is a screen shot of the WKBT article.
The truth is, state law does not allow the county to enact a new sales (PRAT) tax. In a Facebook message, WKBT acknowledged that only municipalities with over 40% of their equalized value being tourism related can enact the tax. La Crosse County doesn't come anywhere near the 40% threshold. Multiple other news sources have reported this would require a change in state law. Given that WKBT has acknowledged La Crosse County cannot enact the tax, why would the story still say the county can?
Earlier this year, WKBT acknowledged falsely reporting that Onalaska had a referendum pertaining to the Onalaska city administrator. Is this what we should expect from a "station of the year?"
